Chatuchak is widely known for its sprawling weekend market, excellent parks, and shopping malls. Chatuchak is also a pretty appealing area to call home. It is conveniently located to the north of central Bangkok and serviced by rail, a network of buses, and taxis. Here are some top things to see and do.
Chatuchak Weekend Market
Thailand's largest market is much loved by locals and international visitors, with over 200,000 people visiting each weekend. The market has over 15,000 stalls offering clothing, accessories, arts and crafts, antiques, housewares, books, plants, and delicious food. Spread across 35 acres, you can visit repeatedly and still not see everything. Open to the public Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 6pm.
Or Tor Kor Market:
Nearby on Kamphaeng Phet Road is the renowned indoor market providing beautiful fresh fruit, vegetable, meat, seafood, and kitchen supplies. The food court offers inexpensive dishes and a perfect spot to refuel.
Throughout the district are street stalls and food carts. Talat Uncle Perm, a popular local market, offers local foods, clothing, shoes, and accessories.
Bon Marche Market was established in response to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis to assist the unemployed and disadvantaged. Some 25 years on, this thriving marketplace prides itself on offering quality goods and services in the bazaar, grocery market, fruit and vegetable market, and food court.
Shopping malls are aplenty. Central Ladprao abutting BTS Ha Yaek Ladprao has an extensive range of stores. There is also Union Mall with popular stores and restaurants on multiple floors and pop-up stalls outside as well. Several plazas adjoin Chatuchak Market, like JJ Mall, JJ Pet Market, and Jutujak Plaza. The hypermarket Big C Extra Ladprao 2 and speciality shops are in the neighbouring Ladprao district.
Parks and Green Space. It's not all about shopping, with a good chunk of the district dedicated to lush green gardens. H.M. Queen Sirikit Park, established in 1992, is a relaxing spot to chill or study botany, with a wide variety of bananas, palm trees, hibiscus, bamboo, and waterlilies. Adjacent Chatuchak Park is the newest addition, Rot Fai (Railway)Park, the larger of the three, containing a three-kilometre bike track with rental bikes available.
The Children's Discovery centre, a science-focused museum with interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits, and a water park are within the park. The Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is a large glasshouse with lush plants, flowers, a stream, a waterfall, loads of butterflies, and an exhibition area.
Eating Out. You'll never go hungry in Chatuchak, with everything from food carts, roadside stalls, market ready-to-eat meals, and restaurants offering Thai, Asian, and western cuisines. For something more upmarket, the Centara Grand Ladprao has Italian flavours at Don Giovanni, delish Chinese at Dynasty and Bluesky Rooftop Restaurant and Bar with fabulous city views and great food.MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, is an absolute must-visit, presenting artworks influenced by traditional Thai and Western artistic styles and techniques. Artworks collected over three decades by founder Mr Boonchai Bencharongkul and other exhibitions are displayed in the museum, which opened in 2012.
Transport Hub. Chatuchak is uniquely positioned with several transport options. The BTS Sukhumvit line terminates at Mo Chit / Chatuchak, meaning easy access to the city centre. The MRT Blue Line runs through the adjoining Ladprao district, stopping at Mo Chit / Chatuchak, and continues onto Bang Sue Grand Station, Bangkok's central passenger terminal.
Inter-country bus services provide transport throughout Thailand, with Sombat Tours and Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak aka Mochi 2) in the district.
