Thailand's fifth-largest island, Koh Pha-ngan, is in the Surat Thani Province of the Gulf of Thailand. Famous Koh Samui and diving mecca Koh Tao are neighbouring islands.
Located 50km from the mainland, arriving takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours by ferry. The island perimeter is approximately 40km, and the highest peak is Khao Ra, at 630m. The mountainous interior comprises diverse flora and fauna and mostly unspoiled rainforests, with Than Sadet Waterfall National Park representing more than half the island area.
Approximately 17,000 people live on the island, mainly along the western and northern coastline. This guide is divided into four neighbourhood zones to help you decide the best area to live in.
Thong Sala and Baan Tai
The main town of Thong Sala is Koh Pha-ngan's administrative centre. The port provides access, including vehicular, from Koh Samui and Surat Thani, and the international hospital, police station, main shopping areas, and fresh markets are here. The international schools within easy reach make it popular with expat families.
This region has recreation facilities such as football, gymnasiums, paddle ball, Muay Thai, tennis, kite surfing, water sports, yoga and more.
Baan Tai, south of Thong Sala, has a long beach with fantastic sunset views and various resorts, restaurants and conveniences. It is popular with the younger set, attracted by the monthly Half Moon Party. It delivers a vibrant yet relaxed vibe.
Upper West Coast
Heading north along the western coast are several small communities providing a quieter lifestyle. The sunset views are delightful, and restaurants, bars, and accommodations take advantage of the vista.
Wok Tum has some good residential properties and is quite close to Thong Sala. Sri Thanu and Hin Kong are favoured by those into a health, wellness and mindful lifestyle, as it offer a range of vegan and vegetarian eateries, yoga studios, and massage and spa salons.
Haad Yao and Haad Salad highlight beautiful beaches and relaxed, peaceful living. Snorkelling and diving from these beaches reveal some of the island's most diverse coral reefs.
Chaloklum
This quieter fishing village has a more authentic Thai atmosphere on the northern coast. It is a favourite for those seeking a more 'local' experience. If you don't mind a 20-minute drive to Thong Sala, you can find slightly cheaper accommodation and an amiable family-friendly environment.
Recreational facilities include fitness centres, Muay Thai, archery, and a host of water sports, plus restaurants and light entertainment. Chaloklum has a number of scuba schools, making it popular for diving and snorkelling. Malibu and Haad Khom are two of the island's most splendid beaches.
Haad Rin
Haad Rin is famous for the Full Moon Party at the island's southern tip. This legendary monthly event attracts travellers from around the globe. A diverse crowd of party-goers dances under neon lights and pulsating music during the night of the full moon. Multiple stages along the beach boom with different music genres. Fire dancers and performers entertain with impressive skills and daring tricks. Many revellers are painted with UV-reactive body paint, presenting surreal scenes. It is a must-see celebration.
Subsequently, Haad Rin is very busy with high energy, particularly around the full moon. If you are looking for lots of activity, maybe this area is for you.
At Lazudi, we have over 50 properties listed for sale on the island, including new builds, land, and resale homes. Are you seeking a stunning holiday home or an expat looking to embrace a quieter beach life? Maybe these properties will pique your interest.
