Chiang Mai: Historically Rich with Everything to Offer [2023 Edition]

Are you dreaming of the next chapter in your life? Looking for adventure, a 'tree-change', or wanting to experience a different culture? Are you considering moving to a new country? What about living in Thailand?

Moving to Thailand may be easier than you think. Thankfully many expats have paved the way and are living the high life in various locations, including Chiang Mai, Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya, and Hua Hin.

Some are lured for career opportunities with teachers in high demand. Others seek a slower pace of life or are drawn to a different culture or community. Many people choose to retire in Thailand to enjoy a freer lifestyle, a lower cost of living, a better climate, and access to good healthcare or other services.

This post will briefly examine the region's distinct history and provide an overview of facilities, services, and amenities to live comfortably. We will also touch on things to do, sightseeing, and a glimpse into Chiang Mai housing.

What To See and Do?
Chiang Mai is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations because the city offers so much. The surrounding countryside and mountains also make for excellent day trips and short breaks.

History and Culture: The Old City is steeped in history. Founded in 1296 by King Mengrai as the capital of his Lanna kingdom. The walled city is surrounded by a moat, with some of these historic fortified walls still in place. This Lanna kingdom was an independent state though it had strategic alliances with other kingdoms that made up ancient Siam.

The Chiang Mai region boasts over 300 temples. Temples of historical significance in the old city include Wat Phra Singh dating back to 1345; Wat Chedi Luang, with the 80-metre stupa; and Wat Chiang Man, the city's oldest temple. Near the Three Kings Monument, the Arts & Culture Museum provides insight into the fascinating history, culture, and lifestyle. Exploring the Old City's narrow lanes is fun and a great way to connect with this historical past.

Colourful Markets and Shopping: Warorat Market is the city's top food market with fresh, preserved, dried produce, ready-to-eat meals, clothing and accessories, and household goods. Chiang Mai's night markets are fabulous for street food, souvenirs, and entertainment. For example, the Night Bazaar, Thaphae Sunday Walking Street, and Wua Lai Saturday Walking Street. Maya Mall and Central Chiang Mai are the two larger shopping centres with many international brands.

Elephants and Wildlife: Elephants are an essential part of northern Thailand's history. Many elephant parks are dotted in outlying Chiang Mai, with the must-visit Elephant Nature Park providing the most ethical experience and caring for 100+ elephants and a host of other animals. There's also the Chiang Mai Zoo and Night Safari.

Mountains, Parks, and Interesting Places: Chiang Mai is surrounded by mountains, and exploring is a favourite pastime for people living in Chiang Mai.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a majestic temple and historical religious site overlooking the city and is considered the most important and perhaps the most visited.

Visit San Kampaeng's Bo Sang Umbrella Making and nearby ceramics shops. Hang Dong and Ban Tawai, the handicraft and home decor region, is the preferred haunt for antique hunters and those looking for distinctly SE Asian furnishing and home decorations.

Hiking and cycling choices in surrounding mountain areas are abundant. These include Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon National Park, Huay Tung Tao Circuit, and Chiang Dao, to mention a few.

Further afield and best enjoyed with overnight or longer stops are Mae Hong Song and Pai in the northwest. To the north and northeast, Mae Salong, a famous tea growing area, and Doi Tung for its world-renowned coffee; Chiang Rai, Chiang Saen, and the Golden Triangle are all outstanding options.

Foodie Scene: Northern Thai (or Lanna) cuisine is delicious, with dishes like Khao Soi, Sai Oua sausages, and Gaeng Haeng Lay worth seeking out. Thai food from all other Thai regions is represented, as are cuisines from around the world. And the foodie scene is blossoming with trendy coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. Nimman Road is dubbed the entertainment zone and an excellent spot for an evening out.

What about Infrastructure and Recreational Facilities?
Although Thailand has a very different culture from many Western countries, culture shock is minimal when settling into Chiang Mai. Most people report a much lower cost of living and a greater sense of freedom.

It has several quality hospitals, some with international JCI accreditation. Several large shopping malls with a full range of apparel, electrical, household goods, fresh produce, and groceries are located around the city. The city has 16 international schools catering to all ages and with various curricula, plus 6 well-ranked universities.

Recreation includes all types of sporting pursuits, creative and special-interest groups, social activities, and more. Many expats and locals head to the Chiang Mai Stadium to partake in various sporting activities.

Chiang Mai Airport directly connects to many other top Thai domestic destinations, including Bangkok, with its two international airports. It also receives direct international flights from 31 cities across 11 countries. A direct rail connection to Bangkok with the overnight sleeper train is also a popular choice.

What is housing like?
Chiang Mai is one of the most popular locations for expats as it ticks many boxes, including boasting a wide variety of housing – from affordable to high-end. For example, this fantastic four-bedroom, five-bathroom pool villa will pique many people's interest.

Escape to a private heaven beside a tranquil lake in the sought-after neighbourhood of Baan Khang Wat, west of Chiang Mai International Airport. This home combines modern design with traditional touches, providing a relaxed, elegant contemporary living.

The residence has 521 sqm of living space, including the pool, plus a spacious garden area. The open-plan dining, lounge, and European kitchen are open to the terrace and a 12m swimming pool. Adjoining is the two-story building with four bedrooms, including the Master, with beautiful mountain views, and all have built-in robes. Quality furniture, fixtures, and fittings are evident throughout, and the artwork was commissioned by renowned Thai artist Nateepol Charoenthurayont.

Other facilities include a rustic seating area with a fire pit, a separate Thai smoke kitchen, maids living quarters, private electric gated road and security cameras, a complete smart-home system, and three covered parking spaces.
