Koh Samui vs Phuket: Which Thai Island is Right for You?

Koh Samui vs Phuket: Which Thai Island is Right for You?

Lifestyle, Living Costs, Infrastructure and Real Estate Compared

Thailand's islands have long lured travellers, retirees, digital nomads and investors. Among them, Koh Samui and Phuket are two of the most desirable destinations for long-term living and investment. But which island fits your lifestyle, budget or property goals better?

This side-by-side market comparison covers lifestyle, infrastructure, living costs and property - to help you choose.

Lifestyle & Community

Phuket is nearly 2.5 times larger than Samui and caters to those seeking variety: gyms, nightlife, fine dining and established expat clubs. Golfers are spoilt for choice, although golf prices are marginally higher than on Samui. Its larger population includes retirees, young families and remote workers from Europe, America, Asia and beyond.

Samui draws wellness seekers, creatives and those craving a slower pace. Social life is more localised, often organised via Facebook or word of mouth, but still very active, with water sports, yoga, Muay Thai and more.

Verdict: Choose Phuket for buzz and variety; pick Samui for a quieter, connected lifestyle.

Shopping & Day-to-Day Living

Phuket's large malls, such as Central Festival and Jungceylon, and lifestyle hubs like Boat Avenue Laguna offer international brands, imported groceries, and entertainment.

Samui is more limited, but still offers everything needed for daily life, including boutique shops and supermarkets.

Verdict: Phuket offers more variety; Samui covers the essentials.

Cost of Living

Thailand has long been a magnet for those seeking a more affordable lifestyle. According to platforms like Expatistan and Numbeo, the overall cost of living in Thailand, including rent, is roughly 95 - 120% lower than in the USA and about 70-90% cheaper than in the UK.

Both islands tend to be more affordable than Bangkok, but Phuket can be pricier in tourist-heavy or luxury zones like Laguna. Numbeo data suggests that Samui's overall cost of living is approximately 14.6% lower than in Phuket.

Verdict: Samui edges ahead in affordability, though Phuket offers a broader range of options and amenities.

Healthcare & Hospitals

Thailand is a major hub for medical tourism, particularly for dental, cosmetic, orthopaedic, and wellness treatments. Private hospitals are renowned for quality and affordability. Although healthcare is generally affordable by Western standards, many expats take out health insurance for inpatient services.

Both islands offer high-quality private hospitals, but Phuket has larger, internationally accredited hospitals, such as Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Bangkok Hospital Siriroj, providing more comprehensive services. Samui is well-served by Bangkok Hospital Samui and several reputable clinics.

Verdict: Phuket has the edge in healthcare facilities.

Schools & Education

Phuket is home to 16 international schools, offering a wide range of curricula including British, American, International Baccalaureate (IB), French and more. Samui, while smaller, boasts six international schools, covering British, Thai and French curricula. Both islands cater to students from early years through to high school.

School fees in Thailand aren't inexpensive, especially in more prestigious institutions. On the upside, students enjoy smaller class sizes, top-class facilities, and high education standards.

Verdict: Phuket has a broader range of international schools and academic pathways.

Infrastructure & Connectivity

Phuket is easier to reach with direct flights from Europe, Asia, and Australia and a bridge to the mainland. Roads are wider, though congested, especially in tourist zones. Public transport, including bus connections throughout Thailand, larger hospitals, and government service offices, adds to the convenience.

Samui, by contrast, has more limited infrastructure due to its smaller size and hilly terrain. It's a 1.5-hour ferry ride from the mainland, and most flights connect via Bangkok. Samui's 55 km 'Ring Road' links coastal towns, making it easier to navigate, though roads can be narrow and steep in parts.

Both locations have strong Internet and mobile coverage, making it an ideal option for remote workers.

Verdict: Phuket wins for infrastructure and accessibility, and Samui wins for more relaxed everyday driving.

Visas & Long-Term Stays

Phuket and Samui both operate under the national immigration framework. Each has local immigration offices to handle visa renewals, 90-day reporting and other matters.

Popular options for long-term stays include the Retirement Visa (for those over 50), the Thailand Elite Visa (offering multiple years of residency for a premium fee), Education and Marriage Visas. In July 2024, the Destination Thailand Visa was introduced for digital nomads and remote workers.

Verdict: No difference in visa rules.

Buying & Renting Property

Phuket's property market is larger and more established, with entry-level condos, luxury pool villas, and branded resort residences. Its popularity among tourists and long-stay residents makes it attractive to investors, thanks to strong rental yields, especially in hotspots like Kamala, family-friendly Laguna and buzzing Patong. Explore properties for sale in Phuket.

Renters also have a broad selection of rental options in Phuket, with one-bedroom condos starting from less than 12,000 THB (approx. 360 USD) per month, up to ultra-luxury pool villas priced over 1 million THB monthly.

Samui's market is smaller, but growing rapidly. It appeals to retirees, lifestyle buyers and those seeking 2, 3 and 4-bedroom villas, hillside plots and peaceful hideaways. Browse our properties for sale on Samui. Most expats settle in the north and west from Chaweng to Bophut, drawn by great beaches, scenic views and a chilled vibe. There is high rental demand vs the available supply and recommend to allow enough time to find a great rental property in Samui.

Strict building height limits (12 metres) mean Samui's developments blend more naturally into the landscape, and the island has fewer condo projects than Phuket. Prices are generally lower, and off-plan villas offer excellent value - modern villas start from around 3.5 million THB. Lazudi offers a curated range of rental properties on Samui for short or long stays.

Verdict: Choose Phuket for a diverse portfolio, and historically strong on property prices appreciating, and go for Samui if you're drawn to space, charm, value and higher rental returns.

Pet Friendly

Phuket and Samui are increasingly pet-friendly, with veterinary clinics, grooming salons, boarding kennels on both islands, and a couple of pet parks in Phuket. If you're relocating with a pet, pet relocation companies assist with permits, vaccinations and quarantine if needed. Alternatively, there are pet rescue centres with animals waiting for adoption.

Conclusion: Which Island Wins?

It comes down to what matters most to you.

Choose Phuket if you want urban convenience, global access, strong infrastructure, and a lively social scene.

Pick Samui if you're looking for a quieter, more chilled lifestyle with good value and natural beauty.

Either way, both islands offer stunning landscapes, warm communities and the chance to live out your tropical dream in Thailand.
