Since Bangkok’s first BTS line (Sukhumvit Green Line) opened in 1999 which originally consisted of 17 stations from Mo Chit to On Nut, followed by the MRT (Blue Line) in 2004 Bangkok has seen a huge growth to its network. As of 2021 the daily rider rate is as a high as 1.5M people, and remains an attractive option for both commuters and tourists looking to escape Bangkok’s notorious traffic jams.
There are 8 lines up and running with a total of 15 more planned. The Red lines connecting to Don Mueang Airport to the new Bang Sue Grand Station (replacing the historic Hua Lamphong in December 2021) were the latest to open. Currently there are 3 under construction, let’s explore:

Under Constructions Lines
The Pink Line (2022)

The Pink line along with the Yellow line will be Bangkok’s first Monorail ‘tracked’ line. The Pink Line will be 34.5 km long and have 30 stations which will run in the northern part of the city from the Nonthaburi Civic Center in Pak Kret District Nonthaburi along the major east-west transport corridor of Chaeng Wattana and Ram Intra roads to terminate at Minburi District in east Bangkok. It was first proposed in 2005 as a heavy rail underground line but was changed to a monorail line in 2008 to reduce construction costs.
The line is designed to link the northern areas of Bangkok and Nonthaburi by connecting with five mass transit lines. At Nonthaburi Civic Center the line interchanges with the MRT Purple Line and the proposed MRT Brown Line. The line also interchanges with the SRT Dark Red Line, the BTS Sukhumvit Line and the planned BMA Grey Line. At the Min Buri terminus, the line interchanges with the under construction MRT Orange Line.
There has been controversy with a pillar collapsing in 2020 on Chaengwattana Road in Nonthaburi’s Pak Kret district, injuring five workers.
The Yellow Line (2022)

This is another new Monorail line, the shortlist of the new under construction lines by about 5 kms and will comprise of a total of 30.4kms over 23 stations. It is located from the N/E of the city center will run from north to south from linking Lat Phrao with Samrong, and will provide mass transit along the heavily congested Lat Phrao road and Srinagar Indra road corridors.
The line will link 6 other lines; the MRT Blue Line, interchange with the MRT Orange Line, the planned MRT Grey Line and MRT Brown Lines, the Airport Rail Link (Bangkok) and finally the BTS Sukhumvit Line. As such, it will be an important cross city link in the middle north-eastern and eastern areas of Bangkok.
The Orange Line (2024)

Arguably the highest profile of the 3 new Metro lines under construction to Bangkok, this line cuts through the center of the city from East and West. Similarly to the Blue MRT line, this new Orange MRT line will have a combination of underground and elevated sections. When fully completed, it will be 35.9 km long with 29 stations (7 stations elevated and 22 will be underground), including an interchange with the current Thailand Cultural Centre Station of MRT Blue Line. There are 17 stations under construction with a further 12 planned.
The line is divided into two sections; the Eastern section from Suwinthawong – Thailand Cultural Centre (22.5 km) and the 2nd phase Western section from Thailand Cultural Centre – Bang Khun Non (17.5 km).
