Great news for Hua Hin! The Thai Government has recently announced the approval of the major expansion of Hua Hin’s Airport in Prachuap Khiri Khan. The purpose of the expansion plan is to better support tourism, to increase future numbers for both domestic and international passengers, and to rival other more established destinations such as Pattaya & Phuket.
A total of 350 million baht budget was allocated for the 2 main projects. 250 million baht is assigned for extending the runway to meet the standards required for large-scale international travel while the other 100 million baht will be used to improve the passenger terminal.
The project is expected to be completed in 2-3 years. Hua Hin has been disrupted by Covid-19 in the past year but it is believed that the income from tourism will help boost the economy once the airport is completed.
The extension of the runways from 2,100 meters to 3,000 meters would accommodate larger jets serving longer distances. Currently, Hua Hin Airport could handle roughly 300 passengers per hour while the expansion of the Airport would allow the airport to handle up to 900 passengers per hour or 2.6 million passengers annually.
In the past years, Hua Hin has been seeing an increase in the number of tourists visiting and is recognized as one of the top international tourist destinations in Thailand and therefore it is important for the city to have an airport that supports more direct international flights. The potential routes are between Hua Hin and China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, India, and Singapore.
A fully operational international airport in Hua Hin will help boost the economy and strengthen tourism competitiveness for both the local communities and business operators in Hua Hin.
